√  Signed U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement

√  Designated by the Virginia Municipal League as a Certified Green Government in 2008.

On June 15, 2005, Mayor Meyera Oberndorf signed the U.S. Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement.  Then on Sept. 23, 2008, City Council re-affirmed the pledge and resolved to development of a sustainable community.

Part of that resolution involved formation of a Sustainability Advisory Team (SAT).  This team will soon benefit from a grant awarded by the AIA in creation of a sustainability plan for the City.  Virginia Beach is currently undergoing an update of their 2003 Comprehensive Plan.  The update includes plans to increase the City's transportation options by supporting a light rail extension to the oceanfront from Norfolk.

Virginia Beach has one of the Commonwealth's oldest Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) programs.  Established in 1995, the City now has 7,262 acres in conservation, with a goal of eventually having 20,000 acres enrolled.
